This is perhaps one of the most beautiful locations and one of the most interesting rock art sites I have ever visited! The rock art site is located on a huge flat boulder (8 X 10 metres) wide with a huge flat surface facing north. The stone boulder is called "Bruteigsteinen" and is visible for many miles, even north of the lake. The boulder sits on the side of a high mountain slope facing north and surrounded only by grassland and grazing grounds for sheep and goats. The road up to the stone is a footpath going zig-zag up the steep hill and visitors have to climb the slope to get to the stone.
From the rock art site there is a magnificent view to the north, east and west over the valley below and the Stordalsvannet lake. From the stone the terrain drops steeply down to the lake below. The stone is also protected by a small fence around it and there is also a information poster. The location of the site and the landscape below suggest the rock art site had a ritualistic purpose or simply a gathering place.
The rock art site is made of 68 figures. The pictures are very typical for the type called "agricultural carvings" and it believed to be from the bronze age, around 1800 to 500BC.
The pictures contains 18 carvings of sun disks or rings with spiral patterns or circles with crosses inside, they are mostly known as sun disks. The site has 8 carvings of ships, the ships are from 30 to 60cm in length and have the typical vertical "crew lines". The probably most interesting pictures are three pictures of trees, something very rare in bronze age carvings. I know of only one more site in Østfold that has the tree carvings. The site also contains some small human and animal figures, a few foot sole carvings and some cup marks. The carvings have not been painted and can be difficult to see in different light conditions. Even with no painting of the carvings, they looks very good and undisturbed.
If any tourists have the chance to visit this site I highly recommend a trip here! The climb up the footpath is worth it!
