The Berghse Kei was errected in 1937 in front of Bergh Castle in s`Heerenberg. The individual granite boulders have been found in the surrounding area in 1917. They originally stem from south Sweden and have been carried to this place by a glacier about 200.000 years ago.
It was intended as a monument dedicated to Jan Herman van Heek, who had bought Bergh Castle in 1912. He was a Dutch industrialist, but also a patron of the arts. He restored the buildings of Bergh Castle. For this reason the muncipality of s`Heerenberg dedicated the Berghse Kei as a monument for him. The capstone has the inscription:
"De Gemente Bergh aan Jan Herman van Heek 1912 – 1937."
The ceremony took place on 15.08.1937. The mayor A.J.M. Nederveen started his laudation with the words: "In onvergankelijk graniet hebben wij U onze waardering gegrift …", which basically means: "In imperishable granite we have etched our appreciation…".
