Artificial Mound in Møre og Romsdal
The Mjeltehaugen mound has been built on a natural sandbank and has originally been around 30 metres across and about 6 metres in height.
During excavations in 1867 and 1878 it was found two graves. The oldest and the original one on the bottom was dated back to around 1500 BC in the bronze age. The other one was close to the top and was dated to around 200AD.
The bronze age tomb was a stone coffin that has orignally been around 5 metres long around 1,2m wide and around 60cm high. The coffin constisted of 8 larger stone slabs. When excavated they broke into several smaller pieces because of the soft type of stone they were made of. The slabs have been decorated with several zig-sagging lines, wave-shaped lines, sun symbols and ship carvings much similar with ship rock carvings known from the same period. In the coffin it was found burned human bones, but no artifacts. The stone slabs has probably been imported because the stone type they are made of doesnt exist in the nearby area.
In the younger grave on top it was found two large bronze buckles, and the grave has probably been made for a female. Both the size and the elaborate stone chamber should suggest it was two persons of high social status that was buried here.
Today the barrow has a flat top from previous excavations and a stone wall or circle is visible around the lower edge of the mound. It is close to the nearby road and the hill has a very nice view over the sea. The mound has probably been visible for miles.
