Round Barrow(s) in Møre og Romsdal
Was it a horrible accident that happened to a family when four members were buried at the same time? Blimshaugen mound was built around 300AD as a memorial for four people, an adult man, two adult women and a little child.

Two hundred years later another burial took place in the same mound, this time an adult man was buried.
It is not common to have so many burials in one single mound. These people were probably from the wealthy part of society because of the large burial monument and the rich burial goods.
Blimshaugen barrow is the only barrow in Sunnmøre which contains both skeletal unburned burials and cremation burials.

The round barrow itself is 35 metres across and around 6 metres in height. It is built upon a natural hill overlooking the sea and it can be seen from miles away. The mound is from an age called the golden age in Sunnmøre, where a lot of wealthy and rich findings from this period has been made in later years. Today the mound is located inside a cattle fence where several young calves are grazing.

Burial 1: Cremation burial from around 500AD. Found in 1901. In a small stone cist a bronze kettle was found from the roman period that contained burned bones, melted glass and a spiral-shaped ring of gold.
Burial 2: Female burial from around 300AD. Excavated in 1934, Vinsil i bronze, clay jars and bowls, a golden ring, combs of bone and iron, hairneedles in bone, spinning wheel in bronze, a bronze pin and pieces of fabric.
Burial 3: Male burial from around 300AD. Excavated in 1934. Spearhead of iron, shield of iron, clay jars, wood bowl, knives of iron, a pin of bronze and a quartz rock (tools to make fire).
Burial 4: Child's burial (female around 5 years old) from around 300AD. Excavated in 1934. She was located in a stone cist with a stone ring around it. It contained a necklace of 13 glass pearls in colours and patterns, pieces of a comb of bones, lots of remains of fabric. She was buried in the centre of the barrow covered in wool carpets.
Burial 5: Female burial from around 300AD. Excavated in 1942. Necklace of amber pearls, clay pots, clay spinning wheel and a yellow glass goblet.

Only the east side of the mound appears as it was in its original state. The whole west side is marked by a deep crater. Today several of these burials are visible in the large crater in the centre of the mound. The Blimshaugen mound is located in a small barrow cemetery with several smaller mounds and at least 4 standing stones. Three of the standing stones have been lost in later years, and only one remains standing. It is located around 20 metres south-east of the mound.

The standing stone to the south-east of the mound is around 2 metres in height, around 40cm wide and around 15cm thick. It narrows closer to the top and the top ends in a point. The stone is tilting slightly. It is just 1 metre away from the cattle fence surrounding the area. It is made of a very light coloured stone.
