Although no other site has yet been found around Lake Paladru, the pollens unambiguously bear witness to the presence of peasants in the region from 3500 BC. AD approximately, almost a millennium before the habitat discovered at Charavines.
At the end of the Neolithic period , a prolonged drop in the level of Lake Paladru allowed the construction of wooden houses on the very shore, where they were well preserved thanks to the subsequent rise in water levels. Placed at an altitude of 500 meters, in the heart of dense forests, the site has provided numerous witnesses of daily life, in particular perishable materials, as well as precise data on the architecture of houses, farming habits, vegetable and meat food, etc. The cultural and technical data reflect the privileged relationship with the western Helvetic area and the Savoy lakes within the framework of the “Saône-Rhône Civilization”. A recent work retraces, for the general public, the diversity and the interest of this site ("Charavines il ya 5 000 ans",Archeology File No. 199 , ed. Faton, Dec. 1995).
The houses are made up of a framework of wooden posts, sunk deep into the lake sediment, which support a framework linked by ropes and lined with plant cover; the walls are formed from interlacing branches now moss and grass. These dwellings rested directly on the ground, without the intermediary of a raised floor as is sometimes the case for certain coastal stations. They include a single, rectangular room, about 8 meters by 4 meters, sometimes extended by a canopy, opening widely onto the free spaces between the houses; this room has in the center a hearth around which were held the domestic activities and areas of rest or sleeping covered with branches and mats. Handicrafts - flint cutting, butchering of meat, etc. -, take place especially under awnings and in the central courtyard. Smaller "attics" with a very irregular plan complete the dwellings; they may have been fitted with raised floors for better conservation of food reserves in the humid lakeside atmosphere. A palisade surrounds the village on the land side, delimiting an area of 1,500 square meters and protects the inhabitants and the cattle left free from predators; its lightness excludes a defensive role.humid lakeside atmosphere.
