Barrow Cemetery in Rogaland
This barrow cemetery is actually a collection of three smaller Iron Age barrow cemeteries. All the cemeteries are found on a the highland ridge overlooking the small village of Midtre Fister. In addition to the collection of barrows there are some more single burials spread around in this area.
The first cemetery is found closest to a small local school and a small soccer field. Most of this cemetery have been destroyed when the school was constructed but two large round barrows have survived and they are just next to the country road going to the school. One barrow is 23 metres in diameter and 3 metres in height. It has some small remains of a stone ring around its edges. The other barrow is 22 metres in diameter and 1 metre in height. These barrows are overgrown with large trees but is still easily visible from the road.
Around 300 metres west of the school is called "Eikehaugen" and is inside a small pine tree forest. It consists of two long cairns, 3 round burial cairns and one round barrow. The long cairns are 12-22 metres in length, 3 to 4,5 metres wide and 0,5 to 1 metre in height. The cairns and barrow is 9 to 17 metres wide and 0,75 to 2,5 metre in height. From this cemetery it would have been a great view over the valley below if the forest was less thick.
300 metres north west of the school is another part of the cemetery containing 8 round burial cairns. This cemetery is overgrown with trees and vegetation and only the two largest cairns are easily visible and they are located just on the outside of the forest. They are 13 and 20 metres in diameter and 2 to 3,5 metres in height.
In a private garden and just next to a road and a small house is a large round burial cairn called "Huldrehau". It is easily visible and overgrown with short grass so it appears more like a round barrow than a cairn. It is 30 metres in diameter and 3 metres in height. it has a very nice round top and shape.
100 metres to the north west of this cairn is another round cairn with a diameter of 20 metres and a height of 3 metres. It is overgrown with thick forest and is very difficult to see from the road.
Visitors to the cemeteries at Midtre Fister can use the parking lot at the local school and there is also a information poster with details of the different parts of the cemeteries.
