Life in the Arctic Circle in the last glacial and post-glacial period required considerable human adaptive capacity, and there is was doubt well-developed social organization and other factors.
 
Here archaeologists found the bones of ancient hunters killed animals: deer, wolves, and mammoths, scrapers and other tools. Human remains were found. In 300 kilometers from Kuryi were found in the parking lot older 26'000 - 29'000 years.

The Last Glacial Maximum ice cover was further north as one travelled east in Russia, so the area in which this 14 year old discovery was located was well south of the ice then and so quite feasible as a place where our ancestors or perhaps Neanderthals might have visited. The full article about this discovery is in Nature 413 dated 6 September 2001. There had been previously discovered traces of humans only slightly younger than this site (eg Kostenki) located almost this far north but within a similar proximity to the ice edge.
