Standing Stone (Menhir) in Sogn og Fjordane

The kyrkjehaugen is a medium sized round barrow located just 20 metres to the west of the Stødle church and just outside the stone fence surrounding the cemetery.

The round barrow is around 15 metres in diameter and around 2m metres in heigt. It has a very pretty rounded top. On the top of the barrow in the centre is a tall standing stone. It is around 4,5 metres in height, around 50cm wide and around 30cm thick. The top has a very pretty rounded shape. The barrow is located on the edge of a natural terracee which has had a large number of barrows. Most of them have been lost in later years due to farming activity. The stone has some smaller stones at the base to support it.

The standing stone is not on its original place however, it was found in the church wall, taken out during makover work at the old church and erected on the mound. It is probably from the area around, which is known to have had a large number of barrows, but the original location is unknown.

Close to the church to the north is the remains of a large burial mound called "Bogahaugen". It has been close to 30 metres in diameter but most of it has been plowed down. Some trees are growing on top of the barrow.
