Rock Outcrop in Luxembourg
The name Chêne-al-Pierre means "Oak at/near the Stone". Nowadays, there is neither oak nor any stone left.
I read that the map issued by Fricx in 1710 (non vidi) for the "War of the Spanish Succession" figures a stone about 5 km North of today's Grandmenil and Vaux-Chavanne.
The toponyms Hameau Pierre-al-Chêne (hameau = hamlet) and Bruyère Pierre-al-Chêne (bruyère = heather) are also found on the more accessible Atlas de Ferraris, folio 195 issued at the end of the 18th c. But the Atlas does not figure any particular stone nor noticeable tree in this region.
All I have on offer right now is a "Print Screen" of the digital edition of the Atlas de Ferraris. To be noted that the hamlet stood at a peculiar point along the border between the Duchy of Luxembourg and the Principality of Liège.
The coordinates I give for the time being correspond to the cross-roads still called "Chêne-al-Pierre". But there is nothing particular to see. Nonetheless, a few candidates have been suggested for the stone, and the debate is open.
