Carving in Rogaland
The remains of the original Vetteland runestone is today in the Archaeology museum in Stavanger. Originally existed four pieces but only two were found. The first one in 1896 was under flat ground, the farmer that found it broke it in four pieces and removed it from the site. A local teacher came by and saw the runes and saved the pieces from more destruction. The second piece was found in 1939.
The stone is around 1,5 metres in heigth, around 60cm wide and around 15cm thick. It has rounded and smooth sides. The missing pieces have been searched for many times without result. The runic inscription is with the older futhark runes and the stone has been dated to the age of migration, around 300-400 AD.
The surviving inscription have been translated to mean: "I ... raised this stone in memory of my son, my son has been haunted by "flagd" (cursed?). ....carved these runes."
There has been much speculation of what the word "flagd" means. A possible version is that it means curse or magic.
In the map I marked where the original stone was found. A smaller stone has been placed 50 metres NNW of the original site.
