Ancient Settlement in Algeria

Roman military headquarters for the province of Africa and home of Legio III Augusta. Largely destroyed by the French building their own barracks during the Colonial period but an enormous town and some excellent temple remains.

As Lambaesis was dismantled by the French in the colonial period all remains of any previous settlement have been obliterated. However visiting the Museum at Laebaesis, the Curator showed me two Greek inscriptions as well as several pre-Roman Punic/Berber stelai dedicated to Baal found on site. We saw similar ones at Guelma when visiting the Roman Theatre there and they were one of the few signs of the pre-Roman settlement there too.
