Barrow Cemetery in Hordaland
The cemetery at Sjo was once a significant large barrow cemetery. There are written journals of around 70 different burial monuments. Today there are only some small part of it left. Most of the burials have been lost over the years mainly because of housing projects, farm activity and construction of roads.
The different objects consisted of round barrows, elongated barrows, burial cairns, cists, star-shaped cairns, square-shaped barrows and several standing stones. The site has been excavated several times over the years and both unburned and cremation burials have been excavated. One of the burials was a pot burial from around 350AD and a soapstone pot that laid upon a pile of burnt bones.
One barrow was a elongated barrow around 20 metres long and around 6 metres wide. It had a small standing stone in each of the four corners.
The monuments that is visible today is one huge round barrow around 25 metres in diameter and around 2,5 metres in height. It has a ring of huge stones around its edges. It is believed to be from the bronze age (around 1800-500BC.)
One three-pointed star-shaped burial cairn. The arms are around 10 metres in length and the centre is around 0,5 metres in height. It is located next to the impressive standing stone.
The standing stone is the most attractive monument in the site, it is around 6 metres in height, around 50cm wide at the base and around 30cm thick. It has a rounded top. It is visible for a long distance and is very beautiful!
