Barrow Cemetery in Limburg.
This is a barrow cemetery dating from 1700-1100 BC. It contains 4 mounds but these are much different than most mounds around here: they're rather flat and overgrown with heather and they're not as round as others, one of them is even more triangular shaped.

There's a path which leads to all four mounds and there are several information stands but unfortunately most of them are unreadable due to weather influences.

In the summer of 1986 I was stationed at Kleine Brogel Air Base, near Peer, Belgium. I was metal detecting in a vacant lot in the village of Wijshagen when I discovered a bronze Celtic burial urn from several hundred years before Christ. The Archelolgisch Park at Wijshagen was established because of my find (which I immediately turned over to the Gallo-Romans Museum in Tongeren, Belgium) and subsequent finds made at the site. You can read my story of the find at http://www.davidhowardemery.com/?category_name=kleine-brogel-air-base-peer-belgium-jun-1986-jun-1989. The photos of the three urns on my webpage come from the homepage of the Tongeren Museum.

    That's a very interesting story David, thank-you.
Detectoring is a very controversial subject here in the UK, mostly to do with the same reasons you found, >>The problem was that archaeologists want things left in situ, which means that they want to record how they are in the original soil before they are carefully removed. All of that information was gone because I removed the urn, the handle, the iron blob, and the twenty bronze items<<
So much important knowledge is lost when this happens, it's a bit like CSI having only the body but no surrounding crime-scene to complete the picture. We try to promote responsible detectoring, I think your story will help with that too.

Thanks TheCaptain, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was a Captain in the Air Force when I found the Celtic urn. Were you in the military too?
I live and work in Bulgaria now but I'm not metal detecting here. Bulgaria is rich in buried treasures but the laws are strict and I'm a guest in the country so I respect them.
      Tell me about you, please.
