Årbakka is an old name, said to mean "the farmstead by the river." For more than 350 years the historic site on Årbakkasanden, with its menhirs and stone barrows have been visited, referred to and illustrated by many a learned researcher. However, we still know very little about this distinctive cultural site. Investigations show that Årbakka is an early iron-age burial cemetery.

It was probably in use from year 0 to around 500AD. There were probably 6-7 or more menhirs and at least 25 barrows, stone cairns and stone circles. Both clay pots and weapons are said to have been discovered in the barrows, but most of these have been lost. Bergen museum houses a find including grave artifacts from 300-400AD, with remnants of needles, combs and decorated pieces of bone, a few glass shards, some bear claws and burned human bones. Recent studies of electrical resistance in the subsoil may indicate that there were more menhirs and stone burial mounds that are visible or can be demonstrated by surface evidence today.

Some of the stones that have previously fallen down have today been restored and today the site consists of 10 visible smaller round barrows and 5 standing stones.

One stone is close to the fence surrounding the site. It is the tallest stone at the site, it is around 3.5 metres in height, around 30cm wide and thick, it has a rugged surface and the top ends in a sharp point. It is only 1 metre away from the fence.
Stone two is smaller, only around 40cm high above ground, around 40cm wide and around 10cm thick.
Stone three is around 1.8 metres in height, around 50cm wide and around 10cm thick. Around its base is a path of coarser sand. It has the shape of a standing slab.
Stone four is around 1.5 metres in height, around 30cm wide and 20cm thick, it has almost an oval cross section. It has a rugged surface and the top ends in a sharp point.
Stone five is almost at the beginnnig of a thick forest, at the edge of the cemetery, it is around 1.7 metres in height, around 30cm wide and around 20cm thick. It also has a rugged surface and a pointy top.
There are 10 visible round barrows. They are all smaller barrows, only from 5 to 10 metres across and from 0.5 to 1 metre in height. They are overgrown with short grass and vegetation.
