A nice modern megalith, an artificial dolmen from the middle of the 19th century, can be seen between some very inviting cafés around Grote Markt (= "Large market") in the city of Tongeren (Flanders) which is said to be the oldest town of Belgium.

This dolmen is about 3 metres tall.
It serves as a stone pedestal for an over-life-sized bronze statue of famous Ambiorix, by Jules Bertin (1866).

Ambiorix, chieftain and/or king of the celtic Eburones tribe, was doubtless one of the most important opponents of Caesar during the Gallic Wars:
In the year 54 BC Ambiorix, nowadays reputed as an early belgian "national hero", was able to annihilate one and a half roman legions.
Later, after the military situation became rather unpleasant for the Gauls, he was at least able to escape over the Rhine river to his germanic allies, whereas all of Caesar's attempts to capture Ambiorix remained without any success.

Tongeren standbeeld van Ambiorix
Tongeren standbeeld van Ambiorix submitted by Alta-Falisa : There are dozens of old postcards showing the statue of Ambiorix standing on this fake dolmen -- meant in fact to represent a 'pavoi'. Ambiorix is most famous in History for having inflicted a defeat to Julius C. Caesar in 54-53 BC. The Roman conqueror came back the next year, and won. Ambiorix managed to escape. Postcard :1899, the oldest I could find. (Vote or comment on this photo)

JUL.2017.

Maybe the chosen category "Central America" does not exactly fit ;)

By the way, Tongeren's Gallo-Romeins Museum (= "Gallo-Roman Museum") is situated just a few meters east of the monument.
The museum has an interesting permanent exhibition, containing several prehistoric and ancient sections, as well as lots of remains of (for instance) Neanderthals, Neolithic and Bronze aged culture groups, Celts, Romans etc.

And right now (until November) there's also a special exhibition about the Etruscians.

Hi Andreas, thanks again for that thorough site description. Moved it to "Modern sites". No idea why it went into "Central America" first. Cheers, Martin
