Open-air and in-house museum at Ramioul (Liège).

The main building principally comprises the museum. All around are workshops (lighting fire, splitting flint, modelling clay, archery) -- and a restaurant serving, so is it claimed, prehistoric meals (I haven't tried, for lack of time). You can easily spend three to four hours ; the activities are varied and suitable for all ages and all levels of knowledge.
As usual now, a bookshop and a souvenirs' shop await you.

The cave (Cave of Ramioul) is about 100 m uphill and justified the selection of this spot for laying out the Préhistosite / Préhistomuseum here.

A car park is provided about 100 m before the entrance.

Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : Taylor's workshop, Neolithic style, present day interglacial period . Authentic fabric is rarely found in excavations. This piece of tissue is modern, but all the tools are authentic -- dont ask me more, I can just sew a button. Please compare with entry below. Photo : April 2017. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : How to light up a fire ? Let's sum it up.

Prehistomuseum
Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : How to light up a fire ? Stage 3. Once the tinder (that mushroom) is afire -- and it does not take more than a couple of minutes --, lay the burning piece on very dry grass, and blow on it... I wonder how many centuries of trials and errors it took to refine that process.

Prehistomuseum
Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : How to light up a fire ? Stage 2. Daddy does it best, knocking flint against marcasite. Once you are used to the process, it doesn't take more than a couple of minutes to light the flinter up.

Prehistomuseum
Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : How to light up a fire ? Stage 1. We have a better understanding of the process since the discovery of Ötzi's body in 1991, in Austria. Pyrite as well as marcasite emits sparks when struck with a harder rock such as flint or quartz. The famous Ötzi (ca. 3300 BC) carried with him a fire kit consisting of (1) fragments of pyrite, (2) a flint stone, (3) and mushroom ignites from which the tinde...

Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : A collection of so-called 'Herminettes', used in agriculture and (still rudimentary) sylviculture -- the exact function is partially unclear. Note the asymmetric profile. Photo : April 2017.

Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : Now ubiquitous in every museum covering prehistory : Various utensils, immediately recognisable. On temporary display are here recent findings awaiting classification. Photo : April 2017.

Prehistomuseum
Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : Ceramic containers became frequent in every neolithic settlement, even the temporary ones. Provenance : Vaux-et-Borset (Liège), a thriving place at the dawn of agriculture. The typical decorative pattern is characteristic of the so-called "Linear Pottery culture". Photo : April 2017.

Prehistomuseum
Prehistomuseum submitted by Alta-Falisa : Among the several workshops on offer, one proposes you the shape flint. At first, it is not quite easy ; with time and experience, it might be possible to produce tools having the desired shape (think of the "Levallois technique"). In any case, no wonder so many bits have been found in excavations ! Note : you are begged NOT to take away the "tool" you have produced at this workshop, in order no...
