Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature in Utrecht
The Amersfoortse Kei is a large erratic giving the city of Amersfoort its nickname "Keistad" (boulder city) and its citizens the nickname "Keientrekkers" (boulder pullers).
There are references from 1544 of a large boulder on the road from Amersfoort to Utrecht. Legend has it that esquire Everard Meyster made bet with his friends that he could get the citizens of Amersfoort to pull the boulder from the Waelberch to the city. On June 7th, 1661, 400 citizens of Amersfoort pulled the boulder on a sled to the Varkensmarkt. Here they were treated to beer and pretzels by the esquire. When the citizens realized that it was actually a pretty useless thing they had done, they buried the boulder below the Varkensmarkt in 1672.
In 1903 it was dug up and placed on the Utrechtsestraat. In 1932 it was moved to Plantsoen-Zuid near the Arnhemsestraat. During the german occupation the boulder was temporarily buried to prevent damage. In 1954 it was given a new pedestal.
In the seventies, the yearly Keistadfeesten (boulder feasts) started. A couple of times these ended with the pulling through the city of boulders by contestants from different european countries. A couple of these boulders can still be found along the ring road.
The Amersfoortse Kei weighs 7157 kg, is 2 meters heigh and has a circumference of 5.25 meter.
