Romeinse Muur, Tongeren
Romeinse Muur, Tongeren submitted by shunt : Part of the Roman Wall (Vote or comment on this photo)
Vitrified Fort in Belgium

One of the oldest city of Belgium is Tongeren ; the other contenders are Arlon and Tournai.
This is where Ambiorix fought Julius Caesar, and many Roman soldiers were killed.
The Eburon settlement called Atuatuca, which was used by Julius Caesar, was situated around here, but the exact place isn't known.

Also, many typical Roman buildings were found, such as the famous wall, an aquaduct, the basilica, ...

The Roman Wall is the most famous of all remains. It was built during two periods, first in the second half of the second century, the second one during the 4th century. The second wall has been taken down almost completely, but there are still parts of the oldest wall visible.

This one was 4.544 metres long, more than 2 metres thick and probably between 5 and 6 metres high.
