Holsteen submitted by Alta-Falisa : The eye-catching groves of the "polijststeen" (polishing stone). Photo : APR.2019. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A group of stones excavated from the sandy ground in Limburg, Belgium. Due to the most striking feature of the stones, the site itself has been called "Holsteen" (hollow stone). The northernmost stone, easy to identify by the fence surrounding it and the information board next to it, is a polijststeen (polishing stone) used by the inhabitants and hunters in the Neolithic era. After the Neolithic, the stones were completely covered with sand. They were discovered again in 1862.

In 1922, Professor Joseph Hamal-Nandrin of the University of Liège investigated the site and discovered the polishing stone. He could identify 51 grooves and 1 polishing surface on that stone.
In 1987, 20 years after the protection as a landscape heritage, the site was re-examined and the archaeologists found various prehistoric objects, like processed and unprocessed flint chips.
For more information see De Holsteen (Wikipedia)

The site is easy to reach, car park at 60 m at most (see the unmistakable entrance of the path to the site in the gallery). The whole region is criss-crossed by numerous paths of various lengths.
