Musee de Die
Musee de Die submitted by uisdean : The Menhir de Die. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Museum in the Cathedral City of Die, Drome, at the northern end of the Rue de Bufardel. The Diois, of which Die is the main town, was the home of the Celtic tribe the Voconces, who had their capital at Luc en Diois, the former Lucus Augusti – the Latin word lucus signifying sacred grove. The museum is rich in Gallo Roman remains, and has a few interesting galleries with adequate interpretation; but many of the objects are stored in outhouses with no explanation of their provenance or dates.

The most interesting object in the museum is the Menhir de Die. This was discovered in 1992, broken in four parts and buried in the ground, during works to expand the premises of the local wine co-operative Jaillance. The menhir is some 4 metres high; beside it were found two smaller menhirs about 1 metre in height.

The face of the menhir is marked with a number of engravings. At the top is a series of four arcs, perhaps representing a Celtic collar. Lower is the head of a horned animal – not very easy to make out – and lower still six or seven cup marks.

Also in the Museum are several Roman and early Christian gravestones and a collection of carved bosses from the medieval cathedral.
