Artificial Mound in Vlaams-Brabant

Tomb (Tumulus) of Pepijn van Landen.
Op deze site bij Landen zijn er bij archeologische opgravingen 2 graven en een waterput uit de Merovingische tijd (2de helft 7de eeuw) en restanten van een oude kapel uit de 8de eeuw tevoorschijn gehaald. Op hetzelfde domein bevindt er zich ook een ‘motte’, een verdedigingsheuvel uit de 13de eeuw. De motte wordt in de volksmond de ‘tombe van Pepijn’ genoemd. Deze heuvel met een diameter van 40 m en een hoogte van 11 meter verwijst naar het domein waar Pepijn van Landen, de eerste Merovingische koning, geboren is en waar hij vermoedelijk gewoond heeft in een voormalig Romeins villadorp. De resten van een ringgracht uit de 12de eeuw zijn ook nog zichtbaar op het terrein.
