The ‘Regte heide’ is a Dutch nature reserve near the village of Goirle. One of its attractions is a barrow cemetry dating from the middle bronze age (2000-700 BC). The site consists of 7 round barrows. The excavations from 1935 revealed finds like pottery, axes, daggers, beads and button.

These finds can be seen at the Oudheidkundig Streekmuseum in the nearby village of Alphen. The museum has limited opening times, so it is advisable to look at their site before planning a visit.

Minor restorations took place in 1998 and 1999. Several of the barrows have a circle of poles surrounding them.

You can park your car on the roadside near het Hoefke 6, Riel. From there it is only a short walk to the monuments. Follow the road and when the road turns right, you go left, and after 100 meters you will see an information panel. From there, you can take the yellow walk (2.5 miles) which takes you within 2 minutes tot the barrows. If you decide to take the entire walk, you will see another barrow in the woods, just after the birdwatchers' cabin. This is the Goirle Grafheuvel.

Please do not climb the barrows. Unfortunately lots of people do, so the barrows require a lot of maintenance.

I did happen to run into some additional information on the barrow cemetry, which might be interesting for those who plan to visit the site. If you parked your car at the Riels Hoefke and walk towards the barrows, you will see a difference in height between the moorlands and the little river you have to cross. Although it is only a few meters, the little river clearly forms a shallow valley.

On an old map of 1760 I found that there was a ford where now is a the little bridge. On the east site of the valley you find the barrow-cemetry. They were generally constructed on higher (dry) grounds Therefore they also served as a landmark to lead one to the ford. On the west site of the valley there was also a group of barrows. The have disappeared a long time ago. They also served as a landmark to lead one the ford. The ford has been used since 800 BC. The 5 tracks coming together near the barrow lead to the ford from various directions.

The alternative name for this barrow is Vijfberg and not Vijfheuvel. I found out yesterday when visiting the monuments that I was wrong. Sory for that.
