Museum Khorramabad, Lorestan, Iran

The fort has an excellent archaeological museum which contains 114 of the famous Lorestan bronzes and silverware items discovered in the province. The Kulma Karrah Cave 20 kilometres south west of Pol-e Dokhtar, Lorestan produced a large number of bronze and silver cast objects and of those that remain in Iran the major part (114) are held in this museum whilst a further 100 are in the National Museum in Tehran. The finds date back almost three millennia and are spectacular. One silver urn has the name of the king inscribed on its inner rim enabling accurate dating to 2700 years ago. The Fort is located in the town of Khorramabad and also has an excellent anthropolgy museum with many dioramas of local traditional life (some based on the village of Bābā Jān - see the Megalithic Portal page for Bābā Jān Tepe at that village). It would pay to telephone ahead to ensure that the archaeological museum is open as when I visited only the anthropolgy museum (well worth a visit in its own right) was open. It was by chance that I met the curator and he took me on a personal tour of the Lorestan Bronzes and Silverware displays. Telephone +98661 2204090. The website on the Fort brochure is a generic one and all in Farsi so it is not given here.
