Ughtasar
Ughtasar submitted by Rich32 : A site view of the Ughtasar caldera taken from the Ngorno Kharabach border at about 11500 ft. Here you can see the boulder streams surrounding the lake. Approaching a 1000 rock art panels have been recorded have been recorded in the area, along with dozens of enclosures. The overwhelming majority of carvings are carved on the stones with the dark glacial patina. Image captured on 2 Augus... (Vote or comment on this photo)
At the Karahoonj site is a second information board about the rock art site of Ughtasar.

It lies north-east of Karahoonj at the Mt. Ughtasar (Camel Mountain) about 17.5km NNE of the town of Sisian. It is just reached by four-wheel drive jeeps in good weather (July-August). There are thousands of carvings in an attitude of 3000 to 3300m, the earliest ones are from the Palaeolithic Era (12,000 BCE).

Additional information added by Drew Parsons in September 2016: I visited this site in September 2016. It is very remote and requires a good four wheel drive vehicle with a very experienced driver to reach. However, it is well worth the effort. There are several drivers in Sisian who can take you to the site - it is about 25 km from Sisian by track and the trip takes around 90 minutes drive one way. The petroglyphs are spread on the darker flat faced rocks around the crater lake and range in age from quite recent doodlings by lonely shepherds to Bronze age pictures of bowmen through to the oldest dated at around 12000 BC. The drive to the site cost 35000 AMD (Armenian Drams ie US$70) for the vehicle and driver in September 2016. I used Levon Vardanyan [levon.sisian@gmail.com] who was very reliable and was not concerned as to how long I spent at the site. His parents also run a guest house in Sisian.

Ughtasar
Ughtasar submitted by Rich32 : View of the southern side of Ughtasar in Armenia. This whole area is awash with archaeological remains, from prehistoric rock art, enclosures through to much later periods. The dark brown patches you can see here are boulder streams where the vast majority of rock art panels occur. To the extreme left in picture, you can just about make out a small enclosure. Ughtasar submitted by DrewParsons : The so called alien image which recurs at this site. In this version I wonder if it might be a stilted hut. Other versions might represent the back of a hunched over and browsing animal as it is being hunted. September 2016
