Ancient Village or Settlement in Iraq
Remains of ancient settlements within a tell (mound) 24 km Northeast of Mosul dating from the 6th millennium BCE to the 2d millennium BCE. The earliest material was of the Halaf Period while succeeding levels show increasing contacts with the southern Mesopotamian Ubaid Culture. There is a group of three tripartite temples facing onto an open courtyard very similar to temples in southern Iraq. The suceeding period is culturally more distinctive and described as the Gawra Period, though contemporary with the Sumerian period. There were tombs with rich grave goods as well as an 18 meter diameter "Round House."
