Pichvnari
Pichvnari submitted by Shimi : This enormous cement sculpture of a chariot rider and two horses guards what once was the entrance to the ancient bronze age site of Pichvnari. Built in the 1960s during the Soviet era. Picture taken in 2011. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Settlement in Georgia

'Pichvnari lies on the Black sea coast of Georgia, at the confluence of the Choloki and Ochkhamuri rivers some 10 Km to the north of the seaside resort of Kubuleti. It was the site of an earlier Cholchian settlement occupied by Greek traders from the mid 5th century BC. Pichvnari means 'Place of the Pine-trees' in Georgian. Its name in antiquity is unknown. First recognised in modern times from coin hoards, the site has been studied since the 1960s by Georgian archaeologists from the north Berdzenishvili Batumi Research Institute.'

Pichvnari now seems to be abandoned and overgrown with no study being carried out since 2009 by the joint international team.
