Leeuwensteen
Leeuwensteen submitted by Alta-Falisa : Etching by F. Runk, made ca. 1800, during his visit of the then Austrian Lower Countries. Preserved in the archives of the City of Tienen. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This standing stone disappeared "overnight" before mid-19th century, most probably as ballast of the railways Mechelen-Liège being laid about 300 m to the North-East in 1837. At that time, megaliths were not recognised the way they are nowadays and, in densely populated areas, many went the same way.

The best tangible trace that remains is this etching by Ferdinand Runk (1764-1834), made around 1800. The windmill is recognizable (although destroyed ca. 1840), but has been placed by the artist much closer to the viewer than in reality. Also, a church, the church of Overlaar (see complete etching underneath), would have been invisible from where the artist stood -- today, it sure is hidden by modern buildings.

A recent booklet by Dr. Paul Kempeneers, Tienen in de Wandeling, 2013, 136 pp., 69 ill., located the lost stone. Even if the view depicted by F.Runk has changed beyond recognition, maps are more talkative : see entries about the Atlas de Ferraris.

The etching (the copper plate) is preserved in the Archives of the City of Tienen.

Leeuwensteen
Leeuwensteen submitted by Alta-Falisa : The cross-road where Leeuwensteen once stood, probably in the top right corner. May 2014. Crossing the picture from left to right, and the map from West to East, is the "Oude Weg". (Vote or comment on this photo)

Leeuwensteen
Leeuwensteen submitted by Alta-Falisa : This entry, an artist view of the stone with the medieval city of Tienen as background, does not add much to the historical research about the Lovensteen (Leeuwensteen). It reproduces the complete etching by F. Runk, of which recently only a detail is generally presented (limited to the stone and the windmill and ignoring the cart on the left). This medal attests that this former huge landmark,... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Leeuwensteen submitted by Alta-Falisa : Atlas de Ferraris. Close-up on the "Leeuwensteen", figured, tilted as it was. At such a busy cross-road, the "Leeuwensteen" was an obvious and important landmark. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Leeuwensteen
Leeuwensteen submitted by Alta-Falisa : The Atlas de Ferraris, elaborated between 1770 and 1778, figures the "Leeuwensteen" on folio 132, clearly identifiable at the cross-road. Tirlemont (in French) is Tienen (in Dutch), whose walls are marked in brown. The road Bost-Wilmersum (modern spelling) still exists, as an asphalted road today called "Oude Weg" ("Old Way"). The road going to the NW, which follows the limit betwee... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Having identified the Leeuwensteen on the "Atlas de Ferraris", at the same place as proposed by Dr. P. Kempeneers in his latest publication (2013) by using other documentation and archives, I have upgraded the "Accuracy" of the location from 3 to 4 : the crossroad still exists.
To be noted that the "Atlas de Ferraris" was still used in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo.

F. Runk, official painter of the House of Habsburg, was sent to the Lower Lands to draw remarkable buildings and sites. He took some liberties, e.g. here by "rearranging" a few items of the surrounding décor.
