Vingen
Vingen submitted by 43559959 : Vingen. Site in Sogn og Fjordane Norway The most conspicuous petroglyphs to be found at the site. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock Art in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. One of the best sites in Norway for petroglyphs is to be found in Vingen, a spectacular site located north of Bergen. In this case Mesolithic petroglyphs.

A most beautiful location where Frøysjøen meets Nordfjord in between high mountains, sea, funny looking sheaps, dolphins playing in the sea next to the site, cliffs rising out of the sea and numerous waterfalls. There are petroglyphs on most flat surfaces available on the site.

The Rock Art at Vingen dates from between 4.000 and 5.000 BC. There can be from 1 to 200 petroglyphs on a single surface. Mostly red deer, but also moose, reindeer, dogs, whales and porpoises. At least 1.500 petroglyphs have been registered.

Note: The battle is on to save this pristine prehistoric rock art from vast new quarry in Norway

Battle to save pristine prehistoric rock art from vast new quarry in Norway by Andy B on Saturday, 02 March 2024
(User Info | Send a Message)
One of the largest and most significant sites of rock art in northern Europe is under “catastrophic” threat.

The Vingen carvings, in Vestland county, Norway, are spectacular, and include images of human skeletons and abstract and geometric designs. Even the hammer stones, the tools used by the ancient artists to create their compositions, have survived.

Now archaeologists warn that the site is facing a “catastrophic” threat after a quarry, a shipping port and a crushing plant in the area of nearby Frøysjøen received planning permission in February 2024.

Dr George Nash, British archaeologist and specialist in prehistoric art at Liverpool University, told the Observer that Vingen was an internationally important site featuring more than 2,000 carved figures. He is “shocked the Norwegian authorities want to stick a dirty great quarry nearby”.

I was planning to visit the place, but due to the high price of the boat trip with a guide (2x30 minutes) and the limitations of time being able to spend at the place, only one (1) hour with a guide!!!
Instead I bought a book «Vingen. Et naturens kolossalmuseum for helleristninger», 460 pages, Akademika Forlag, by Trond Klungseth Lødøen and Gro Mandt and payed 522,00SEK in 2014. I had some mail exchange with the local tourist office in Bremanger and complained about all the restrictions of the site.
The possibility to go there is limited too, in 2014 the last trip of that season was on August 15th.

This is more or less correct, although the mountain climbing bit might be stretching the facts a little too much. The access limitation is just too strange due to the location. It is not exactly the Chauvet cave. But a great site if you happen to be washed ashore here by accident.

As boats are quite common for transport in that area the access limitation is perhaps not really strange. Also most of the rock faces are heavily disintegrating and may suffer when people crawl around at the site. So i somehow understand the restrictions.
Apart from the fact, that it is not allowed anyway: There has been no hiking path leading to the site afaik. As a result someone inexperienced may end up in an uncomfortable situation. There are many steep or even vertical rock faces and the folding of the mountains makes it at least a hard task. Climbing does not necessarily mean using ropes. At least that's not what i meant. Do you have better wording?

It is important to add, that the site can only be reached by boat (unless you are a mountain climber). Furthermore access to the site has been strictly limited to guided tours. More information regarding current situation seems to be available here https://www.facebook.com/Vingenfeltet/info/?entry_point=page_nav_about_item&tab=overview Visits are otherwise prohibited since 2002.
