The city was found on the Fourvière hill (Fourvière in fact comes from the Roman "Forum"), in 43 BC upon the order of Roman senate. The initial reason for settlement was to provide shelter for the group of Romans refugees before Gallic tribe of Allobroges but the impotance of the town growed rapidly. For the next four centuries the district of the hill became the hub of the city life. After the Battle of Lugdunum in 197 AD, which is said to be the bloodiest of all clashes between two Roman forces, the city was pillaged and gradualy lost its prestige.
Archeological site on Fourvière hill includes main Roman public buildings. The Grand Theater with capacity of 10,000 spectators dating back to 15 BC and smaller Odéon with 3,000 seats for musical performances. Just above the big theater is found the amazing museum of Gallo Roman civilization.
