Rock Art in Sogn og Fjordane. Ausevik - A SACRED SITE AND A CULT SITE FOR THE AREA.
The rock images at Ausevik were made by members of a hunter-fisher-gatherer community in the Stone Age. They give us primarily an insight into the community’s beliefs, ideas and rituals, possible along with their myths and legends.
The rock images give us information about how Stone Age people viewed the world and their role in it. What were their opinions? Who produced the rock carvings, and why? What influenced their choice of subject? These are some the questions which archaeologistes and people in general ask themselves.
No matter how we interpret the rock carvings at Ausevik, they are unique works created by a prehistoric community, where hunting deer, the performance of ritual dances and the use of symbols have been brought together as different aspects of an entity. Here - on the rocky seashore at Ausevik - people have congregated to celebrate their ritual festivals and ceremonies, to confirm the continued existence of the life and culture of their community in its widest sense.
There are about 350 fiures to be seen. Date of production estimated to be around 4.000 BC.
