Round Barrow(s) in Netherlands

A few weeks ago I was looking on the internet for information on the history of my hometown. By accident I got to an article on the round barrow at Alphen, some 11 km south of Tilburg. Although I passes the mount many, many times on my bicycle, I never knew it was there.

The barrow was discovered in 1961. A priest was studying an arial photograph of the area and noticed the structure. He rounded up a group of vollunteers and in 1961 and 1962 they moved a lot of earth over a great distance to reveal and restore the complete structure. The barrow consists of a mount, a ditch and a wall. Together with a same type of barrow at Hoogeloon, 25 km tot the east, the barrow is one of the biggest in the Netherlands. They both measure 41 metres across.

The barrow has been subjected to archeological research and has been dated 4500 years old. This makes it very early bronze age. On one of the signposts an age of 7000 years is mentioned but this can not be confirmed by any information found on the internet. The informationpanel next to the barrow states an age of 4500 years, so the 7000 years on the signpost most likely is an error.

The barrow itself is situated on an open spot in the woods. The easiest way to get there is to take the footpath next to the farmhouse Kwaalburg 23, Alphen. The barrow is signposted from there, and can be reached after a 700 meters walk. The barrow itself is now a locally listed monument and the Dutch Forrestry Commision take care that the open spot remains open in order to make the mount, ditch and wall stand out from its surroundings.

The mount can be seen clearly on Google maps, following this link.

In the nearby village of Alphen you can visit the Regional history museum. It holds the findings of the burial cemetry on the Regte Heide.
