TheCaptain saw from a distance on 21st Sep 2005 On the top of the hill to the north of Nages are the remains of an oppidum. This is a nice looking hill rising steeply from the plains, and with what looks to be a sculpted top.

Ancient Settlement in Languedoc:Gard. The site has been occupied from Neolithic to Roman times. The gallic tribe Volques Arecomices settled here about the middle of the 3rd century BCE. They built the fortifications with towers. Access to the oppidum was through three gates guarded by towers.

Roads were straight, parallel, up to 5 metres wide and laid out "en damier" (checkerboard style). Houses were comfortable. Shops had several rooms. There was a fanum, a small gallic temple. Ceramics include huge vessels for oil, campanian pottery and italic amphores. Coins date from 400 BCE onwards and are Roman, gallic, from Marseille and Nimes. In the 1st century BCE the oppidum declined and was given up around 10 CE, when the inhabitants moved to Nemausus (Nimes).

Large parts have been restored.
