Ancient city in Syria

Originally a military camp built by the Assyrians in the 9th C BC, in Roman times it was a fortified desert outpost to defend against the Sassanids and became known as Sergiopolis, after St. Sergius. It continued to be of later importance as a caravanserai.

Having no running or ground water it depended on cisterns to capture rainwater.
