Sculptured Stone in Moscow

Polovtsian (Cumanian) sculptured stone in Kolomenskoe Park in Moscow.

This mound stone stela of the 12th century was brought to and installed in Kolomenskoe in 1930s.

Reprint from the information sign:
«In fact, this statue represents a sitting man wearing a helmet, with a bowl of sacred beverage in his hands. Such sculptures were put on burial mounds by wandering tribes that used to populate the South of Russia. The sculpture represents an image of a respected ancestor: its Russian name baba (i.e. "woman") is supposed to be an erroneous interpretation of the Turkic vavá meaning "ancestor"».
