Ancient Settlement in Jordan. Ain Ghazal is a Neolithic site located along the bank of the Zarqa River on the outskirts of Amman. It dates as far back as 7800 BCE, and was inhabited until 5000 BCE. At 15 hectares, 'Ain Ghazal ranks as one of the largest known prehistoric settlements in the Near East dating to the pre-pottery Neolithic.

Remarkably lifelike 7000 year old plaster statues were discovered there from 1983 onwards, which are now being restored.

Two caches of plaster statues were unearthed at 'Ain Ghazal, one in 1983 and the second in 1985. The 1983 cache of statuary contained more than 30 statues and busts and are dated by 14C to 7,800 BCE; the second cache (~8 statues and busts) has not been dated by 14C, but stratigraphically it appears to be a couple of hundred years younger, or around 7,500 to 7,600 BCE.
