In the Golan heights area there are hundreds of dolmens. A conspicuously large dolmen field makes up part of the Gamla Nature Reserve.

Apparently these dolmens were used as burial structures by nomadic tribes who buried their dead in central holy places, before the Bronze Age about 4,000 years ago.

Dolmens are built of large stones. Each dolmen is built of a large horizontal stone slab supported by two upright stone slabs. The name dolmen comes from the Breton (Celtic) language and it means a stone table (dol = stone; men = table). About 700 of the thousands of dolmens found in the Golan Heights are located around Gamla.

Some of the dolmens were reused for secondary burials long after they have been erected
