Ancient Settlement in Syria. Ugarit was the ancient capital of the Ugarit kingdom. The earliest settlement was a small fortified town in 8000 BCE. Ugarit was already important enough to be fortified with a wall by about 6000 BCE. Ugarit flourished between 1600 and 1200 BCE, when palaces, temples, shrines, and libraries were built there.

Clay tablets in many languages were found here. Ugarit is credited with inventing one of the first proper alphabets, which was significantly more conveniant than the Hierogliphics and cuneiform used until then. The city was also the most important center of Minoan trade in the Syrian region and succesfully dealt with both Egypt and the Hittites. Ugarit appeared to also specialise in the preparation of Murex sea shells into valuable purple dye. It was destroyed about 1185 BCE during the Sea People invasion. This also marked the end of the Bronze Age. Although the name of this city was known from Egyptian and Hittite sources, its location and history were unknown until the accidental discovery by a local peasant in 1928 of an ancient tomb. Excavations were begun in 1929 which established the identity of the mound as the site of ancient Ugarit.

Archaeological findings in Ugarit dating back to Hellenistic and Bronze ages

Syrian Excavation Team discovers several archaeological findings dating back to Hellenistic and Old Bronze ages at Tal Shamia, 7km, north Ugarit in Lattakia Province, is based on a rocky mountainous area next to al Arab River where the Syrian mission started its excavation works.

Archaeological findings in Ugarit dating back to Hellenistic and Bronze ages
Syrian Assistant Director of Excavation at Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, Ahmed Farzat Taraqji, said excavation works aim at cleaning the tombs engraved into rock and draw their architectural projections to get some indications about their history.

The mission's works could identify the eras of the finds:

-Small architectural parts belong to the Hellenistic age.

-Remains of clay jars similar to those found in Ugarit belonging to the middle Bronze Age were found at the southern part of the site.

-Remains of clay jars belonging to the Old Bronze Age were found in the southern part of the site.

- Human Skeletons belonging to the Third Bronze Age were found in the north-west of the sits.

Taraqji said the finds indicate that the site was first inhabited in 2600 BC with coincidence of the second construction boom emerged in the Near East.
