Ancient Settlement in Isreal. An excavated ancient Tel just northeast of the Sea of Galilee, the structure is located near a later (9th century), fully excavated city gate complex which is part of a larger ancient settlement or city that some scholars suggest is the possible site of the biblical town of Bethsaida, or, alternately, the capital city of the biblical Geshurites.

Dr. Rami Arav of the University of Nebraska, and a team from multiple universities began a more focused excavation in 2011 on the ancient structures, which include an Iron Age gate complex.

Archaeologists Uncovering Possible 10th C BCE City Gate Near Sea of Galilee by bat400 on Monday, 17 June 2013
(User Info | Send a Message)
Although its traces were first excavated in 1994, it is only recently that archaeologists began to understand that what they had uncovered were the possible remains of a city gate dated to the 10th century B.C.E.

The structure is located near a later (9th century), fully excavated city gate complex which is part of a larger ancient settlement or city that some scholars suggest is the possible site of the capital city of the biblical Geshurites, a people who shared an important connection with the ancient Israelites. The Geshurite city also underlies the remains of what is believed to be the biblical town of Bethsaida. Bethsaida was a fishing town often visited by Jesus during his ministry.

Smaller finds included pottery shards of “Hippo” jars, Cypro-Phoenician shards, cooking pots and a handle with a X mark. The finds represent a mix of time periods, as it is believed that a construction foundation trench created during the Roman period had cut through the earlier strata (layers of cultural remains) and dislocated artifacts from their original positions. The most extraordinary small find was a small stone seal made out of black jasper. Dated to the 9th century B.C.E., it depicts a robed male striding to the right, his left leg extending beyond the robe in Mesopotamian style, and his right hand extending out. His left hand is down behind him. A white residue appears to illustrate long hair behind his head. On the back is an engraving of the head of a scarab.

If the find proves to be a 10th century city gate complex, the discovery could have implications within the context of the current scholarly debate about the nature of ancient Israel during that time.

Excavations will continue during the summer of 2012, with a focus on uncovering more of the possible city gate complex, in addition to investigations into other parts of the site where Hellenistic and early 1st century C.E. Roman structures and artifacts have been discovered.
