Ancient Mine in Israel. In the surroundings of Timn'a Vally in the southern 'Arava there are exposures of sandstone formations, in it can be found deposits of different ores that contains Copper, Manganese, Iron etc. The area is abundant with Malachite (CuCo3 Copper Carbonate).

From the beginning the early Chalcolithic era traces of human activity can be found as Copper mining, quarrying and smelting in primitive furnaces. Through the duration of the eras it gets more sophisticated.

Some of the copper deposits are exposed in some places due to weathering and the method of strip-mining used. It is recognised by the the chunks of the mineral (green blue) scattered, and traces of the digging.

The Strip-mine on Mt. Michrot is 100 x 60 m.
