Ancient Palace in

A decorative relic of the sixth century awaits visitors on the outskirts of Caesarea. Lying in situ, the Bird Mosaic offers a rare glimpse into the lives of the aristocratic Christian family who commissioned this ancient work of art. After the floor lay buried and unknown for hundreds of years, sightseers can now step out on to the specially strengthened tiles, knowing that they are literally walking on history. A quick tip: the full glory of the mosaic, which features a series of running animals and 120 birds, only comes alive when wet, so it’s best to visit during Israel’s short, winter rainy season.

During the excavation in 2005 it was determined that the ‘Bird Mosaic’ was a large open courtyard, with a portico along the western and southern sides, in very large architectural complex (more than 40 x 62 m), only one-fifth of which was excavated. To the north, south, east and in the remaining the part to the west of the open courtyard there are rooms and courtyards paved with mosaics.
