Moti writes: Last Saturday I visited the Remains of several Chalcolithic settlements dating to the 4Th millennium BCE on the banks of wadi Be'er Shev'a in the southern suburbs of Be'er Shev'a city. I found out that not much survived ,Bir Abu Mattar is under a park and Bir Al - Safadi (the 2 sites are 500 M' apart , Bir Abu Mattar to the N' of the wadi and Bir Safafi to the S') neglected and not much to see ,i took photo's of the site Inc. 2 dwellings entrance,Chalcolithic potsherds and flint tools and shards and some surface structures.

Remains of several Chalcolithic settlements dating to the 4th millennium BCE were uncovered a short distance from one another along both sides of Nahal Beer Sheva, in an area which is today within the city limits of Beer Sheva. Excavation of these sites was conducted in 1951-1960 at Beer Matar, Beer Safad and Horvat Batar. Near the latter, an additional site, Neve Noy, was excavated in 1982.

The uniqueness of these sites is that each consisted of up to 10 units of subterranean dwellings, dug into the soft loess deposits on the banks of Nahal Beer Sheva. The sites became well known for the many special finds associated with them and this local culture came to be known as the Beer Sheva Chalcolithic Culture.
