Round Barrow(s) in Ukraine

The locals call this burial mound “Tolstoi's Grave”. It is located about 10 km away from the famous Chertomlyk-Kurgan.

This burial mound was discovered 1964. In 1971, the Kurgan was completely removed from 9m height and approx. 70m diameter. Beneath the mound, the excavators found two chambers. In them were buried a King, a Queen and an about 2 years old child, probably their son. The main chamber was robbed out. The robbers, however, did not reach the famous pectoral, for a few centimetres, in the Queen’s chamber.

On the basis of the amphores which were broken during the funeral ceremony, it was possible to ascertain that the “King” was buried at the latest in the middle of the 4th century BC; the “Queen” and the “Prince” shortly afterwards.

Thank you for your thoughts and interest. With your help, it is now obvious that the coordinates are 47.679166N 34.137222E. This is next to the railway line.

I think something is not correct about this entry.

This entry puts Tolstaja Mogila at 47.672500, 34.131944 where a mound is visible on google maps.

Wikipedia says the famous pectoral comes from Tovsta Mohyla. The english wikipedia does not provide a coordinate. But the ukranian wikipedia has an entry for Tovsta Mohyla with a coordinate which is close to the one for this entry but not the same. The wikipedia coordinate points to a coordinate (47.679444, 34.137222) close to a building and a railroad and on the photo from 1970 on the english wiki it cleary shown the mound next to that building and railroad so I think Tovsta Mohyla is actually at the coordinates from the wikipedia page. At the coordinates from this entry there are no railroad and buildings close to it so i guess it is not the one from the 1970 picture. Wikimapia shows burial mounds at both locations (and lots more in the area) but names the one at the wikipedia location Tolstaja Mohyla (link) and names the one at the coordinates from this entry Svynarevka Mohyla :-/

So I think there are two mounds mixed together in this entry and they should be split into two entries, but I'm not sure what the correct names should be and which one the pectoral comes from.

ua.igotoworld.com shows another Tolstaya Mogila at a third location 47.827309, 34.027357 where on google maps a mound is visible so maybe this is the real Tolstaya Mohyla (or there are several with this name).

Maybe we should also use a consistent translation for grave (Mohyla or Mogila) ;-)
