Ancient Village or Settlement in Cyprus

Ancient Phoenician Settlement in Cyprus. Within downtown Lanarca.
1300BCE saw the establishment of cyclopian walled structures including both domestic and ritual/religious buildings. Kition became one of the most important City States and is seen as one of the islands first establishments of the Greek culture and language. The Phoenician rebuild on the same site after the dark ages, at a later phase, namely the Cypriot Iron Age. It also has to be pointed out that the great philosopher Zeno hailed from Kition. Sadly, the Cypriot authorities have only chosen to conserve 3 temples and a slipway of ancient Kition. Assyrian artefacts have also been found there.

Due to extensive trading with the Egyptians, the Phoenicians were heavily influenced by the Egyptian styles, though Hathor is of semitic origin, having evolved from the Sumerian Ishtar, via Astarte and Ashtoreth. Object in the Louvre in Paris. (Vote or comment on this photo)
