Temple in Nubia

Dedicated to the God Mandulis, the Nubian version of Horus, and to Isis. Started by Augustus in 23 CE over the ruins of a 26th Dynasty temple, structurally complete but decorations unfinished. The temple was originally located in the Kalabsha village, 40 Km south, and was moved in 1961-1962 to it's location 1 Km south of the Aswan High Dam by German archeologists. It is the largest free standing Nubian temple. It originally had a further outer wall, now lost, which also enclosed the Temple of Dedwen as well as a gate, which was donated to the Berlin Egyptian Museum. Between the 4th and 7th Century CE, the temple became a Coptic Christian church but suffered only minor defacement. All the best reliefs were on the back walls and the interior.

Temple of Kalabsha
Temple of Kalabsha submitted by AlexHunger : Temple of Kalabsha god Mandulis in Human form on right, accompanied by Isis and Augustus in Egyptian dress. Mandulis was the Nubian incarnation of Horus. Romans were careful to cultivate the locals as Egypt was the breadbasket of the empire and because they believed the Egyptian gods were the equivalent of theirs, just under a different guise.
