Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations submitted by AlexHunger : Museum in Ankara. It holds exhibits from the Stone Age to Hellenistıc times. The museum is a former 'Bedeste' or duty free Turkish shopping centre. It was European museum of the year in 1997. A must-see in Ankara. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Museum in Turkey. National Museum covering all of national prehistory in a converted 15th century covered bazaar. There are good exhibits on Çatalhöyük, Hattuşa and many other sites.

It was museum of the year in 1997, but there are not always signs for every exhibit.

Note: 44 historical artifacts returned to Turkey through the efforts of the culture and tourism ministry

Culture Ministry brings 44 historical artifacts back to Turkey in 2010 by davidmorgan on Friday, 11 February 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
A total of 44 historical artifacts, which were originally unearthed in Turkey but later taken abroad, were brought back to the country in 2010 thanks to the efforts of the Turkish culture and tourism ministry.

Most of the returned artifacts belonged to the "Tatarli Tumulus" in Turkey's central Afyon province and they were delivered back to Turkey in February 2010, tourism officials said on Monday.

The artifacts include 38 small wooden pieces and 4 pieces of timber dating back to 450 B.C. which were smuggled from Turkey and delivered to the Munich Archeology Museum in Germany.

Moreover, a ceramic piece and a bowl cover from the Knidos ancient city of Turkey's southwestern Datca town, which was smuggled to Britain in 1971, was delivered back to the Turkish embassy in London in June 2010. The artifacts were later taken to the Anatolian Civilizations Museum in the Turkish capital city.

Officials said that the culture ministry continued to display efforts for the return of numerous artifacts in Germany, USA, Bulgaria, Britain, Denmark, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine.

Boğazköy Sphinx, Pergamon-Zeus Altar, Aphrodisias-Old Fisherman Statue and Trojan artifacts in Germany; an Ottoman ceramic panel at the Louvre Museum in France; Trojan pieces in Russia and the Heracles Statue in Boston, USA are some of the important artifacts needed to be returned to Turkey, officials said.

A total of 1,864 archeological artifacts, most of which are coins, are expected to be delivered back to Turkey from Serbia and Montenegro this year, authorities added.
