Stone Babas on Dvortsova Street
Stone Babas on Dvortsova Street submitted by dodomad : There are six babas here in total. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This unique display on Dvortsova Street, in Kirovohrad attracts the passerby by the statues’ exotic appearance. In a park by the roadside is a collection of six statues, one Neolithic anthropomorphic stele, one medieval Polovtsian “baba", the rest Scythian, one of the largest collections in Ukraine, left by the local authorities to the mercy of the elements, and now potentially far worse of course.

Three of them were inherited from the city’s first local history museum under the able guidance of Vladimir Yastrebov (1855-98), local historian, archeologist and ethnographer. He was the one who discovered the anthropomorphic stone statues in the steppe part of Ukraine bordering on the Dnipro River, currently known as Prydniprovia.

In Scythian times, such statues were commonly used as grave markers, connected with cults of the dead among nomadic people. Those erected in Ukraine were left by Scythian and Sarmatian tribes of the 7th to the 4th century BC, and by Turkic peoples of the 6th to 13th century, particularly by the Cumans. In steppe Ukraine, most of these statues were apparently female – hence the name, “baba” that literally means “granny” or “old woman.” Most such figures are in standing or sitting positions.

They seem to emit some cosmic energy. I've created a Twitter thread highlighting more of the the Anthropomorphic Stelae of Ukraine
https://twitter.com/megportal/status/1515787527361384456

and so far I have created several pages the museums in Ukraine which hold stelae. They were on display until recently but now in storage somewhere I hope. All have virtual tours linked from our pages. Check the map and nearby sites list above for details.

The little one on the left has been pixelated by Google as their algorithm thinks it's a person!
