Ancient Village or Settlement in Lower Egypt (North)
Buto is a site south of Tanis in the Egyptian Delta, on the Sebennytic branch of the Nile, which used to be the capital of Lower Egypt during the Predynastic period. It was located along the southern shore of the Butic Lake. Buto was identified with the semi-mythical Predynastic capitals of Lower Egypt 'Pe and Dep'). The city now comprises of three mounds (tells) which consitutet the two parts of the town and a temple complex. The occupation of the site stretched from the Predynastic period up to the Roman Period.
The site was first re-identified by Flinders Petrie in 1888, although it was not to be systematically excavated until the 1960's , where only evidence of the Late Period, Ptolemaic Period and Roman Period was found. The Predynastic occupation was at first thought to have been a myth. The first evidence of Predynastic occupation at Buto was only first uncovered in the 1980's by Thomas von der Way, who had to dig down as deep as 7 Meters to find evidence. Buto was occupied for 500 years during the Predynastic Period, or from about 3500 BCE. The pottery finds supported the theory that Lower Egypt was taken over by Upper Egypt at the time of unification.
