Although Pompey never actually set foot in Egypt, having been assasinated by agents of Ptolemey, in order to gain favour from Ceasar, this column is named after him despite having been set up during the reign of Diocletian.
It is at the location of the Serapeum which was destroyed shortly before during a revolt, whose supression is celebrated by the column.
The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Pompey’s Pillar And Sphinxes, The Serapeum, Alexandria, Egypt, which includes antiquarian photographs and a postcard image showing this site, background information and a list of reference sources for more information.
