Rock Cut Tomb in Lower Egypt (North)

This undergroung Hypogeum dates to the Ptolemeic / Roman time, during which several round shafts were sunk into the soft limestone and then expanded into chambers for individual and family tomb in a syncretic Egyptian and Greek style.
There was also a rest area for family members coming to visit.
The site was only rediscovered in about 1900, when a Donkey nearly fell into a hole.
Unfortunately, by then the ground water had spoiled the vast majority of the wall paintings.
A further Eyptian - Greek tomb from elesewhere in Alexandria was transplanted to this location and is now above ground, together with a Lapidarium in the parking lot.
