Ancient Settlement in Antalya Province, Turkey

Ancient Lycian city/town
The "Anda" part of this towns name suggests an Anatolian origin of the 2nd Millennium BCE. Excavations have uncovered ceramics and coinage dating as far back as 5th Century BCE.

Earthquakes in 141 CE and 240 CE devastated the town, both times there was reconstruction.

The town was largely abandoned after a earthquake in the 5th Century CE, although limited occupation continued on the site until the 11th Century CE.

The town is arranged on a series of terraces built into a mountainside. Parts of the site are quite well preserved due to them being buried in landslides.

The town of Arykanda was 'rediscoved' in 1839 by an english traveller called Charles Fellows. The site has been excavated since 1971.

After more than 30years of excavation the archaeologists now think the focal point of the town is in a deep gully that runs through the site where they have always dumped their spoil (this is quite typical - the best parts of the site are always under the spoil heap).

Arykanda
Arykanda submitted by h_fenton : This is possibly the Bouleuterion or a small theatre the seats which are above/behind the wall across the centre of the photo have been cut straight into the bedrock. The photo also shows the steepness of the hillside that the town is built on.

Arykanda
Arykanda submitted by h_fenton : photo of part of the baths complex at Arykanda, in the wall at the back there are holes which I am told were for beams to support an upper floor, however they seem very close together. This photo also shows quite clearly how landslides have affected this site.

A good set of pictures of Arykanda, nice green vegetation.
I'll have to post a photo of when it's yellow/brown.
